Lasik Glossary

Ablate - A surgical term meaning to remove.

Acuity - The clarity and sharpness of ones vision.

Astigmatism - A condition caused by irregularities in the eye. I causes images to become distorted or misshapen.

Binocular - Means both eyes.

Calibrate - When dealing with lasik surgery, it is the calibration of the laser for correct tissue removal.

Cataract - A clouded lens of a clients eye, which can cause distorted vision.

Concave Lens - A hollow shaped lens, these type of concave lens need correction and is less powerful. This type of lens also causes near-sightedness.

Convex Lense - A bulging lens which helps to correct far sightedness and is a lens which assists those in reading and viewing small objects.

Cornea - This is the part of the eye which bends to reflect light. This is what focuses the eye and protects the other parts from damage.

Diopter - A full measure of the optical lens, done for those needing glasses.

Diplopia - A term for double vision.

Dry Eye Syndrome - A very common and curable condition where they eye ducts do not produce enough tears and lubrication. It can be a very painful condition, which may take surgery to fix. Most of the time this syndrome is treated with a simple eye drop.

Endophthalmitis - An infection of inflammation of the eye, which is most likely caused by surgery.

Endothelium - Perfect 20/20 vision, there is no need for lasik surgery or any other vision correction.

Epithelium - The outer layer of cells and protection from infection on the eye.

Excimer Laser - A laser which is ultraviolet and used in lasik surgery to correct the lens.

Flap & Zap - A nickname or slang for lasik surgery.

Ghost Image - A vague image project off one, this condition is not normal and may require some correction.

Humphrey Instruments - Tools used to measure eyes> Opthamalic equipment.

Iris - Ring of tissue surrounding and behind the eye, the iris creates the eye�s color.

Kerato - Another term for the cornea.

Keratomileusis - When the cornea is carved to improve vision.

Laser - The word laser is a shortened term for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

Lasik - This is an acronym for Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. This is reshaping a lens so that it may become more useful.

Lens - The focusing part of the eye, which allows you to see from varying distances.

Myopia - Not being able to see objects at far away distances.

Nearsigheted - Similar to myopia.

Pupil - The hole in the center of the iris and changes size in the light.

Refractive Errors Imperfections in the eye which cause errors in vision.

Retina - Sensory tissue surround the eye, which sends messages to the brain.

Sclera - The strong layer on the outside of the eye which protects the eye.

Stroma - The middle, tough tissue of the cornea.
